In September 2022, Claremont McKenna College - one of the top U.S. liberal arts colleges - broke ground on its 160,000 sf Robert Day Sciences Center. It will be home for the College's next-generation Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences - a powerful, multi-disciplinary, computational approach to advance gene, brain, and climate knowledge.

The Robert Day Sciences Center is the latest addition to Claremont McKenna College's campus. Set to open its doors to the students in 2025, the building is conceived as a stack of 'bars' housing different programs. A large open atrium at the heart of the building invites social interaction and visually connects the different disciplines of the Kravis Integrated Sciences Department.

With each floor, the bars rotate 45 degrees to realign with key elements of the masterplan. As a result, eight outdoor terraces are created and offer sweeping views of the surrounding campus and the San Gabriel mountains beyond.

The structural trusses necessary to enable the flexible column free volumes to span large distances become the building's triangulated facade expression: board formed precast facade panels that mirror the wood clad structure of the interior spaces.

Lorenz Krisai was the project design lead for the Robert Day Sciences Center during his time at BIG.
